NES-style platformer with tactical party combat and adult themes
StashlyVN Review
Echidna Wars Mini: Revitalized is Ceph's restoration of a lost HTML demo originally created by Asimofu and D-Gate, reimagined for modern engines while preserving its Megaman-influenced level design. You control a rotating squad of warriors defending your city after it's pulled into a hostile dimension by an invading Echidna army. The premise trades typical heroic fantasy for a grittier scenario: capture and restraint are central mechanics, not just flavor text. If a party member falls in battle, you can either mash keys to escape captivity yourself or switch to a free ally and fight to rescue the imprisoned one. It's a clever integration of the game's adult themes into actual gameplay rather than narrative window dressing.
The platforming feels authentically retro—tight controls, deliberate jump arcs, and level layouts that reward pattern recognition. Each stage requires you to destroy a purple crystal to properly complete it, adding a secondary objective beyond simply reaching the exit. Ceph has enhanced the original 30fps visuals by rebuilding the engine to run at 60fps internally while rendering at 30fps by default, mimicking classic hardware; toggling 60fps mode (press K) modernizes the feel if you prefer it. The pixel art remains crisp and readable across HTML5, Windows, macOS, and Linux builds, though the itch.io embedding can be finicky—expect a separate window to launch when you hit play.
The game is still in active development with features pending, so expect occasional rough edges. The control scheme is fully remappable (swap Z/X functions with 1 or 2), and the menu system handles most navigation, though some functions like speed adjustment aren't yet wired up. If you enjoyed Megaman's methodical platforming but want something that also explores adult themes through mechanics rather than cutscenes, this scratches both itches.
Pros
- Genuine NES-era platforming with responsive, precise controls
- Restraint mechanics meaningfully integrated into combat and progression
- Party-swap system adds tactical depth to standard platformer fare
- Pixel art remains clean and readable at both 30fps and 60fps modes
- Cross-platform support (Windows, macOS, Linux, browser)
- Ceph's restoration work shows respect for the original while modernizing the engine
Cons
- Several promised features still unimplemented at this version
- itch.io embedding issues force external window launch on browser
- Tutorial/instructions minimal—control scheme takes experimentation
- Single-player only with no difficulty settings mentioned
- Active development means balance or content patches may arrive unexpectedly
